The Pope considers it “evident” that “immediate and decisive” measures must be taken to eradicate the scourge of hunger and poverty, in a message addressed to the participants in the G20 summit held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in which he also criticized the “silent acceptance” of this situation.
In the text, read to world leaders by the Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, during the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, the Pontiff has claimed that all measures adopted to alleviate hunger “must be carried out carried out jointly and collaboratively, with the involvement of the entire international community».
He has also said that the implementation of “effective” measures requires “a concrete commitment on the part of governments, international organizations and society as a whole.” «The centrality of human dignity given by God to each individual, access to essential goods and the fair distribution of resources must be a priority in all political and social agendas,” the Holy Father defended.
In this way, it has highlighted one of the proposals that the diplomacy of the Holy See has been presenting to the international community for years: redirect funds currently allocated to weapons and other military expenditures towards a global fund aimed at combating hunger and promoting development in the most impoverished countries.
This approach – according to the Pope – “would help prevent the citizens of these countries from having to resort to violent or illusory solutions, or from leaving their countries in search of a more dignified life.”
Global solidarity
In the text, addressed to the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Pope has also called for global solidarity and coordination between nations to confront social and economic injustices and has stressed that hunger is the result of the structural inequalities on the distribution of resources, not on food scarcity.
«The Holy See will continue to promote human dignity and make its specific contribution to the common good, offering the experience and commitment of Catholic institutions around the world, so that in our world no human being, as a person loved by God, is seen deprived of daily bread. May almighty God May he abundantly bless your work and efforts in favor of the true progress of the entire human family,” he concluded.
The motto of this edition of the G20, ‘Building a just world and a sustainable planet’, reflects Brazil’s commitment to promoting global agreements that combine economic prosperity with social inclusion and environmental development. The program has included discussions on food security, climate change, global health and reform of the international financial system.
