Statements by Western politicians about an allegedly possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as publications by foreign intelligence services and foreign media of the dates of the “attack” are conceived as an external pressure loop on the course of Russia’s negotiations with NATO, the United States and EU members on security. On Wednesday, February 16, political scientist Alexander Asafov expressed this opinion to Izvestia.
“The most unnecessary has already been sacrificed – this is a statement by the Estonian foreign intelligence service, since this is not very important. But I think that the topic will continue,” he said.
Information efforts will continue along with the emergence of new dates, start times and circumstances of the “invasion” until the final goal is reached – US President Joe Biden will say that in the conditions of the most difficult negotiations with Russia, he allegedly managed to stop the war, the political scientist said.
Asafov is also sure that from the point of view of the West, such information manipulations are a necessary part of pressure on Russia to shift the focus in negotiations on security guarantees.
“To discuss not Russian security proposals, those same red lines, but to impose a fictitious absurd agenda of the alleged invasion of Ukraine. Insofar as this makes it possible to present their claims and respond selectively to Russian proposals,” he stressed.
Earlier in the day, Estonian intelligence said in an official report that the Russian “invasion” of Ukraine had been postponed until the end of February. The reason why it did not take place on February 16 was called “the unpreparedness of the Russian army.”
Member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Dmitry Belik, in turn, told Izvestia that such absurd statements are ridiculous to read. Europe and the United States, as the deputy stressed, played the game that they themselves invented. Now they are trying to tie reality to their fantasies. All this, according to the parliamentarian, looks ridiculous and stupid.
On February 15, British tabloids The Sun and Daily Mirror reported that a Russian “invasion” of Ukraine was planned for Wednesday night. On the morning of February 16, The Sun journalists noted that the night when the Russian attack was supposed to take place passed without incident, and edited their article.
The Daily Mirror newspaper, in turn, published a new article, which says that Russia’s “invasion” of Ukraine did not take place.
Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday said that the nature of the hysteria of the Western media about the alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine shows that the climax is still far away. The Kremlin spokesman noted that “remission will not come immediately and Russia needs to be patient.”
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, asked “US and British media disinformation Bloomberg, The New York Times, The Sun, etc.” announce the schedule of Russian “invasions” for the coming year.
Western politicians and media representatives have recently been spreading numerous speculations about possible Russian aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, the Russian side has repeatedly refuted such statements, emphasizing that it does not hatch plans to invade a neighboring country.
Thus, on February 12, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, said that the propaganda campaign launched by the United States and its allies about “Russian aggression” against Ukraine pursues provocative goals, thereby encouraging the authorities in Kiev to sabotage the Minsk agreements and harmful attempts to use force to solve the “problem of Donbass”.
