The statements about the “belonging” of the Russian regions to Ukraine are the fantasies of the poor, resulting from the mythology about the unique Ukrainian people, which began to be imposed on Ukrainians back in the 18th century. This opinion in a conversation with REN TV expressed the political scientist, professor of the Financial University under the government of the Russian Federation Oleg Matveychev, commenting on the statement of the writer and philosopher Pyotr Kralyuk.
Ukraine’s desire to fantasize about its importance instead of learning from history can lead to the complete collapse of the country, the expert said.
“This mythology about the fact that Ukraine is a true state where“ real Russians ”live, while“ fake Russians ”live in Russia, arose back in the 18th century. This was done by the Poles, especially during the partition of Poland, when offended Polish nationalists tried to raise the morale of their people and get adherents in Ukraine. They began to compose stories “about a special Ukrainian people,” he explained.
Matveychev noted that such stories were not perceived by the inhabitants of Ukraine for a long time.
“Even in Lvov, which at that time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, people considered themselves Russians. And the word “Ukrainian” functioned in the same way as “Siberian”, “Uralets” – a resident of a certain region. In general, the very word “Ukraine” is an exact translation of the legal term, and it means “brand” or “border”, – said the political scientist.
In his opinion, speakers who speak out about the ownership of Russian lands in Ukraine should study the “Tale of Bygone Years”.
“Kiev has always been a province, for which they have always fought and taken it, but this does not mean that it is the center of statehood. Power is where the prince is, not the so-called capital. Therefore, all their claims to Voronezh and something else are just a fantasy of poor, unhappy people who have already driven them into what is unknown with their fantasies, “Matveychev emphasized.
On November 5, Kraluk accused the leadership of the USSR of distributing Ukrainian territories to other republics and said that five regions of Russia – Bryansk, Belgorod, Kursk, Voronezh and Rostov regions – “belong to Ukraine.”
Olga Timofeeva, a former member of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs on November 7, noted that attempts by politicians and cultural figures of Ukraine to “appropriate” the territory of Russia have been sounding for a long time and are not something new. In her opinion, in such cases it is necessary to ask the question whether the Ukrainian state existed at all before it was formed by the young Soviet Union.
On the same day, political scientist and director of the Institute of Contemporary State Development Dmitry Solonnikov commented on Kralyuk’s words and noted that Russia should not pay attention to “the statements of not very healthy people.” At the same time, he added that Moscow should deal with the official position of the Ukrainian authorities, in particular with the desire of Kiev to return Crimea.
