The City Council of Donostia, where the PNV governs, this Thursday prohibited the solidarity dinners which has been carrying out the neighborhood initiative for four years Kaleko Afari Solidarioak (KAS) in the neighborhoods of Egia and Amara. The decision comes after this Monday several people gathered without permission against this project, causing an altercation in which the Ertzaintza had to intervene.
The three PP councilors in the town hall actively participated in the concentration, Borja Corominas, Jorge Mota and Vanessa Vélez. The events took place in Teresa Square in Calcutta, in front of the Palace of Justice. Dozens of people joined the call, announced on social networks.
The Protestants, who denounced a lack of security in the streets, began to insulting and intimidating volunteers and vulnerable people who make use of the neighborhood initiative, according to images recorded and published by the local media Irutxuloko Hitza. The escalation of tension led to the intervention of the Ertzaintzawhich attacked ultras, KAS members and poor people.
The mayor of San Sebastian, Eneko Goiahas made the decision to prohibit this project, which has been running for four years and which distributes up to 200 dinners a day to people without resourcesaccording to the organization. KAS has called a press conference this Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the same square where the altercation occurred.
“What alternative is the Donostia City Council going to give to the 200 homeless citizens who, thanks to KAS, have the opportunity to have the only hot drink of the day?” the neighborhood initiative asked on its Instagram account.
Support from parties and unions for solidarity dinners
The councilor and senator of EH Bildu Olaia Duarte has criticized the Jeltzale Government’s measure: “In two years, the number of homeless people has increased by 81% in Donostiaand the waiting list to receive bags of food is 200 people.
On social networks, Duarte has lamented that “the abandonment of the City Council and the County has forced them to launch solidarity initiatives such as KAS. Now they also want to prohibit solidarity.”
For his part, the LAB union has stressed that “solidarity cannot be prohibited.” Thus, he has shown his support for the neighborhood initiative and to “citizens organizing themselves to fight in solidarity against poverty.”
Also the Kontseilu Sozialista from Donostia, part of the so-called socialist movement established in Euskadi, has positioned itself against the PNV decision. “We strongly condemn the position of the Donostia City Council to prohibit solidarity dinners. Organize against the spread of fascism and racism! Total solidarity with the Solidarity Street Dinners!” they have demanded.
