The neighbors affected by the floods of the Alberche River, from the head to the mouth that runs between the communities of Castilla y León, Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha, have created a citizen platform to “fight” for their “well-being” and also for their “properties”, affected by the Avenida de Agua, after two weeks of the river. In the case of Toledo, the most serious have occurred in Escalona, Hormigos or Santa Cruz del Retamar, with dozens of people evacuated from homes.
‘Affected River Alberche’, as they have called the group, say they represent “those who in one way or another have suffered damage to the four floods of our homes within less than 15 days, from March 10 to 22, 2025”.
In a statement they explain that for several years, “each and every one of the neighbors, those who are and those who are no longer among us, we have requested by various means the cleaning of the riverbed and has never been carried out,” they regret.
“We were aware that in the case of a massive influx of waters, this situation could be derived in tragedy and it has been.” In his opinion, with the situation of the Cauce of the Alberche River and what they describe as “uncontrolled openness of the reservoirs without any forecast, it has generated in all of us a feeling of impoverishment and generalized abandonment, seeing how our homes were literally converted into swamps, without any possibility of doing absolutely anything”.
They remember that many neighbors have already made “important” repairs after the flood suffered on the occasion of the DANA in September 2023 and that these repairs “have now been destroyed”.
They also believe that “the maintenance and cleaning of infrastructure would have greatly minimized the impact of these openings”, but criticize that the works have not been carried out a year and a half later, such as the cleaning of the sewerage.
“Many of the evacuees are older people, without means, with their diminished motor faculties who are now outside the place for which they have fought so much,” they point out, to clarify that the platform is born with the intention that this situation “is not repeated.”
“We want to be sure that our homes are safe and with it our well -being.” They have written a manifesto with their requests. “They are not others to ask administrations to fulfill the functions of safeguarding and safeguarding the citizen and their well -being.”
