Cruz Azul could not come back and ended up tying a goal against Pachuca in the match of day 7 of the Grita México 2021 tournament of Liga MX. With Yoshimar Yotún’s own goal and a score by Santiago Giménez, the Sky Machine and the Tuzos signed the equalizer. In the added time of the first half a play happened that could change the development of the entire match. In this, Miguel Herrera Equihua swept into the area and knocked down Jonathan Rodríguez.
‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez fell to the grass and the referee Alejandro Funk pointed out a penalty immediately. At first glance, the signal seemed very clear: the Pachuca center-back had swept recklessly and had contacted the Uruguayan striker, thus causing the penalty.
However, the whistler was called in to review the play at VAR. In the repetition, with slow motion, it was appreciated that Herrera Equihua did connect the Cruz Azul attacker, but that in the first instance he had touched the ball. After deliberating for a few minutes, the central referee ended up reversing his original score.
Some arbitration specialists such as Felipe Ramos Rizo indicated that the penalty had been marked incorrectly in the first instance.
Whistling Funk’s performance was also criticized for the cancellation of a Pachuca goal. Nicolás Ibáñez scored a pair of goals in the duel against Cruz Azul at the Azteca Stadium. However, these were nullified after they were marked out very tightly.
Ibáñez’s goal fell at minute 36 and then meant 2-0 in favor of the visitors. However, this one did not count.
With this result, Cruz Azul was in seventh position in the Grita México 2021 tournament, while the Tuzos are in 13th place in the competition.
