Monterrey and Cruz Azul will star in the most interesting semifinal of the Concacaf Champions League. The two Mexican clubs come to this event with great expectations. Los Rayados will seek to make the final step to the final after having a disappointing season in Liga MX, while the Sky Machine will seek to win the regional tournament after having been crowned league champions.
The series between both teams will begin this Wednesday, August 11 at the Steel Giant and the return will be played at the Azteca Stadium on September 16. To get to these instances, both squads have had to overcome some obstacles and tests. This has been the path of the Albiazul team to reach the semifinal round against Cruz Azul.
The Rayados’ activity in the Concachampions started in April. The team led by Javier Aguirre beat Atlético Pantoja, from the Dominican Republic, in the round of 16 phase. In the first leg, the regios won 0-3 with goals from Vincent Janssen, Alfonso González and José Alvarado. On the return, the score ended 3-1. On the global scoreboard, Rayados beat the Dominicans 6-1.
In the quarterfinals, the Liga MX team had a more difficult time. In this instance they faced the Columbus Crew, current MLS champion. In the first leg, held at the end of April, the teams drew 2-2 at Mapfre Stadium. Aké Loba and José Alvarado scored on Monterrey’s side. The American team was present on the scoreboard with goals from Milton Valenzuela and Lucas Zelarayán, former Tigres player.
Columbus faced the return without the ‘Chino’, his best man. The second leg, held at the beginning of May, looked to be very close, but the local team prevailed with authority in the Steel Giant. With a double by Maximiliano Meza and a goal by Miguel Layún, the ‘Vasco’ side beat the Columbus Crew. On the global scoreboard the board was 5-2.
Just over three months after this match, Monterrey will return to Concachampions activity. The regios have not had the expected start in the MX League and in front they will have the champion of the Guardianes 2021 tournament, already with all their figures.
