The majority of organic leaders in the Region support Adrián Vázquez, while prominent institutional positions support Edmundo Bal
The militants of Ciudadanos who are up to date with the payment of the dues – the regional leadership refused to give the updated data on affiliates in the Region considering it “reserved information” – will decide this week the future of the party in the primaries to elect the new head of a political formation that fights for its survival.
The voting, which is again online despite the controversies of the past, which even led to the opening of judicial proceedings in the Region, will begin at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow and end at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The primaries are of particular interest in the Region of Murcia, where the main organic positions of the party have aligned themselves with the candidacy headed by MEP Adrián Vázquez, who considers himself the official party, while the State lawyer and spokesman in the Congress of Deputies, Edmundo Bal, is uniting in his favor the leaders most critical of the drift of the organization in recent years.
The ‘Reborn your party’ list, the one headed by Adrián Vázquez (who has publicly reneged on the motion of no confidence in the Region), includes the regional coordinator of Citizens in the Region, María José Ros Olivo, and the person in charge of the group from Cartagena, Andrés Álvarez de Cienfuegos. Neither of them currently has an institutional position, although they were general directors in the years in which PP and Cs governed the Community in coalition. Other notable supporters of this option are Pedro García Rex, secretary of the regional organization and councilor for Festejos in the Murcia City Council, and the deputy mayor of Lorca, Francisco Morales.
A young member of Mazarrón, Marcos Morales, leads a third alternative candidacy
On the other hand, the ‘Ciudadanos de nuevo’ candidacy, whose leader is Edmundo Bal, has in its ranks the Murcian councilor Paqui Pérez, who is also secretary of Institutional Relations in the Cs Region of Murcia. From the outside, she has the support of Senator Miguel Sánchez (who finally refused to enter the list), the spokesperson in the Regional Assembly, Ana Martínez Vidal, and the mayor of Cehegín, Jerónimo Moya, among others.
Likewise, there is a third way, ‘The bases of change’, led by a young member of Mazarrón, Marcos Morales. Against all odds, this third candidacy managed to overcome the cut of guarantees. The Murcian would be the national general secretary of Ciudadanos if he manages to prevail over his two adversaries.
Campaign in Murcia
The two main candidates, Adrián Vázquez and Edmundo Bal, were in the Region exposing their respective projects and trying to capture the vote of the affiliates. The lawyer offered a public appearance on January 2 in the Plaza Belluga in Murcia, while the MEP gathered some 70 members last Saturday in Los Molinos del Río Segura, also in the regional capital. For his part, Morales has requested to organize an event today with affiliates at the Centrofama headquarters.
In the process of collecting endorsements, ‘Your party is reborn’ slightly surpassed ‘Ciudadanos de nuevo’ in the Region, although that does not mean that the same thing will happen in the voting.
Pedro García Rex, who is openly committed to the candidacy of Adrián Vázquez, is confident that the process will develop in the best possible way and that, after the electronic voting, all wounds will be closed and work will be done in the same direction.
For his part, Senator Miguel Sánchez, who supports Bal “out of friendship, loyalty and ideological closeness”, considers that the party “would make a mistake again and this time irreversibly” if it does not appoint him national leader. Sánchez clarifies that he has no expectations of leading the party at the regional level. “My time in Ciudadanos is coming to an end, I have the feeling that I am already visualizing the end of the road,” underlines the senator.
