The pain and the fury

While the heart continues to shrink, the long wave of the disaster can already be perceived: hoaxes and conspiracies will be built on the blood of the victims. And politics will suffer a new bath of discredit

I took a bus and in seven stops I was at the gates of hell, by Raquel Ejerique

The horror is still unfolding. We still do not know the true magnitude of the tragedy. Dozens of missing people are still being searched. There are thousands of survivors who lack everything. But, while the heart continues to shrink, the long wave of the disaster can already be perceived: as after the attacks of March 11, 2004, a time of turbulence arrives. As then, hoaxes and conspiracies will be built on the blood of the victims. And politics will suffer a new bath of discredit. October 29, 2024 will mark a before and after.

The roar of the cauldrons in the partisan underworld is beginning to be heard clearly, where work is being done to divide society and reap electoral benefits. We hardly know anything, but it seems that there are already those who know everything: there are those who can point out culprits with names and surnames and detail why they are guilty. Obviously, the culprits belong to the other side. Whether bombs or water, terror or nature, the culprits are always others.

A private citizen, someone who does not represent anyone and who does not charge from the taxpayer to manage public affairs, is free to say any outrageous thing that occurs to him at home, on the street, in the bar, in front of a camera or in the networks. And the torn outburst is perfectly understandable when it comes from a victim overcome by pain. That’s normal.

Some politicians, their spokespersons and their correspondents are another thing. Like any other citizen, they have every right to be idiots and, in fact, they frequently exercise it. But seeing and hearing them, during a catastrophe like the one that occurred this week, is embarrassing. And courage. Can’t you behave sensibly and decently for a while, if only out of respect for those who suffer? No, they can’t. The electoral calculation takes precedence over the deployment of rescue teams.

I’m not going to mention names. To you, hypothetical reader, so-and-so will easily come to mind, I suppose aligned in an ideological camp opposite to yours. I prefer to emphasize the enormous responsibility of political parties in spectacles such as the one developed in recent days in parallel to the disaster, and in what will happen over the coming weeks and months: they will proclaim one thing and whisper another; They will cast the shadow of doubt on causes and consequences, whatever the verifiable truth may be; They will hang the label of incompetence on others.

The State, that is, the administrations as a whole, is not measuring up at crucial moments. That is what citizens perceive now: a failure of public policy and management. The only thing missing was such a disappointment in a society that, like many others in Europe and the Americas, has long viewed those who run it with distrust. Add what will come next, the endless exchange of reproaches and lies. And we can get an idea that the misfortune caused by nature (and aided by an uncoordinated warning system and a dysfunctional emergency mechanism and, if you want, by the incompetence of certain people) will be followed by a human-made misfortune with unpredictable consequences. .

Times of fury are coming.
