The PAH demands that the Government regulate social rent or transfer powers to the communities

The Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) demands that the Government regulate social rent or, failing that, that it transfer powers to the autonomous communities so that they can do so. This request comes after the Constitutional Court will annul a good part of the Catalan housing law of 2022 and will overturn the obligation of large landlords to offer social rent in the event of eviction due to non-payment.

They have communicated this during an action in front of the Parliament, in which they have received the support of other entities such as Irídia, the Third Sector Roundtable, Òmnium, the ANC, or unions such as CCOO or UGT. Some affected people have also participated, such as Roi, who suffered five eviction attempts until the judge recognized his right to a social rental.

But due to the decision of the TC he has lost that right and lives with “anguish and fear” the possibility of eviction. “What is unconstitutional is leaving people on the streets,” he pointed out. According to PAH data, about 20,000 families have benefited due to the obligation to offer social rent to vulnerable people.

However, the PAH has demanded that President Illa stop “making big announcements” and “get his act together.” The PAH spokesperson, Juanjo Ramón, has insisted that the housing crisis is “urgent” and has disgraced the president that his solution is to build 50,000 homes, “when there are 40,000 empty apartments in Catalonia.”

For this reason, the PAH demands that the articles of the law that allow the expropriation of apartments that large owners have uninhabited be applied. “The excuses about there being no housing are immoral,” Ramón remarked.
