The Defense Ministry has agreed on a plan for the delivery of Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines to the Pacific Fleet, Izvestia sources in the military department said.
According to the plan, the rearmament of the Russian submarine forces in Primorye should be completed by 2024. By this time, six submarines of this class will be in service in Vladivostok. They will be part of the 19th submarine brigade.
Initially, the ships of the 636 series were developed for export to the countries of the Warsaw Treaty Organization. Since the second half of the 1990s, boats for the PRC, Algeria and Vietnam have been built according to the project and its modifications. However, then it was decided to purchase such submarines for the Russian fleet. They are created according to the modernized version 636.3. These boats differ from the basic version by better running characteristics, even lower noise level, the presence of an automated control system, and a modern navigation system.
The first series of six Project 636.3 submarines was built from 2014 to 2016. All of them serve in the Black Sea Fleet. In September 2016, a contract was signed for six more submarines for the Pacific Fleet. Today, there are three of them in service. The Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was transferred to the fleet in 2019, the Volkhov in 2020, and most recently, on October 12, the Magadan submarine entered the Navy.
Submarines of project 636.3 are considered one of the quietest in the world and are capable of performing a wide range of tasks – destroying surface and submarine ships, patrolling coastal waters, and conducting reconnaissance.
The length of the ship is 74 m, the maximum displacement is over 3.9 thousand tons, the speed is up to 20 knots, and the autonomy of navigation is 45 days. On board it carries six 533-mm torpedo tubes, can use torpedoes and mines, as well as Kalibr-PL cruise missiles.
