Between two important professional figures for taking care of the patient and organizing a department, the nurse and the health and social worker (Oss), a third emerges: the nurse assistant. The State-Regions Conference gave the OK to this new figure that we will soon see in public and private healthcare.
What will he do
The decree starts from the description of the figure, “an operator in possession of the qualification of OSS who has followed a further training course obtains the qualification of assistant nurse”, we read in article 1. “Collaborates with nurses ensuring healthcare activities as well as carrying out the activities typical of the social healthcare worker profile“, specifies the document which establishes the agreement between the Government and the Regions on the nurse assistant which in the initial considerations highlights that the figure arrives to respond “to the general need to respond in a differentiated way to the growing health needs of the population”.
How to become a nurse’s assistant
“It is required – we read in the agreement – the qualification of social-healthcare worker or equivalent qualifications, the possession of secondary school diploma of five-year duration or another qualification of the same level obtained abroad and professional experience as a social-health worker of at least 24 months”, we read in the agreement. But “they can access the nurse assistant courses, operators in possession of the OSS qualification, without a five-year secondary school diploma or other qualification obtained abroad, with five years of work experience in the OSS qualification, gained in the last eight years; for these operators there is an additional preparatory theoretical module, aimed at the acquisition of logical-mathematical skills, text comprehension, synthetic writing, knowledge in the scientific-biological field, lasting at least 100 hours”. They are exempt from presenting the aforementioned certificate, foreign citizens “who are in possession of the final qualification of the second school cycle or a higher level qualification obtained in Italy”.
The training course “has a total duration of no less than 500 hours, to be carried out over a period of no less than 6 months and no more than 12 months. The course is structured in theoretical teaching modules of at least 200 hours, minimum internship 280 hours, and at least 20 hours of exercises and simulations”, specifies the agreement.
How much will he earn?
There is a lot of concern on the part of trade unions on this issue, because compared to the work done to increase nurses’ salaries in the public and private sectors, today the issue remains that they are lower in the private sector. The scenario they don’t like is that the nurse assistant in the public sector could have a higher salary than a nurse working in the private sector.
