The Community is the second autonomy in the country with the highest percentage of those affected by sexist attacks
The number of women victims of gender-based violence and the number of complaints filed in the Region of Murcia during 2021 increased by 10.6% and 12.3%, respectively, compared to the previous year. The upward trend observed in the main markers of sexist violence since the lifting of the state of alarm due to the Covid-19 health crisis has been maintained steadily since the second quarter of 2021, which has meant returning to annual figures similar to those of 2019.
The Annual Report on gender violence, made public this Friday by the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence, also shows that during 2021 the courts for violence against women agreed 1,256 protection orders, 18.16% more than in 2020 , and handed down 1,339 convictions, 40.95% more, which was a new all-time high.
The rate of women victims of gender violence per 10,000 was 66 throughout Spain. The Balearic Islands were above the national average, with a ratio of 103; Murcia, 88.9; Valencian Community, 86.6; Canary Islands, 81.6.5; Andalusia, 74.7, and Madrid, 70.7. The lowest rates were found in Castilla y León, where 42.6 victims were recorded for every 10,000 women; Galicia, with 44.5 and the Basque Country, with 47.1.
81.7% of the complaints filed were by the victim herself, directly in court or through police reports. Complaints due to direct intervention by the police stood at 11.3% of the cases. The number of complaints filed by relatives of the victim is hardly reflected in the statistics, while the reports of injuries received directly in court represented 4.7% of the complaints.
In the past year, in 622 cases the victim of gender violence availed herself of the waiver of the legal obligation to testify, which represents a percentage of 9% in relation to the total number of women victims of gender violence. The courts also agreed, derived from the protection orders and other precautionary measures, a total of 1,684 criminal judicial measures to protect the victims (women and minors). The most frequent were restraining orders (1,243) and the prohibition of communication (1,304).
On the other hand, the judicial bodies issued 1,350 civil precautionary measures, whose purpose is the protection of women and minors while the criminal process is resolved. The most frequent were those related to the provision of food (404) and those related to the allocation of housing (354), 16.87% of the total.
Children live with or suffer violence
Very significant are the data related to the civil measures issued by the courts of violence against women to protect the children of the victims, which reflects the entry into force on June 24, 2021 of the Organic Law 8/2021, of protection integral to childhood and adolescence in the face of violence. Thus, during 2021, the judicial bodies suspended the visitation regime for 285 defendants, compared to the 36 cases in which this measure was adopted in 2020. And in 113 cases custody was suspended.
This law modified article 544 of the Law of Criminal Procedure, establishing the suspension of the visitation regime “when a protection order with measures of criminal content is issued and there are well-founded indications that the minor children had witnessed, suffered or lived together” with gender violence.
In addition, the courts of violence against women agreed in the Region of Murcia 28 specific measures for the protection of minors to avoid danger or harm and in 19 cases they suspended parental authority. The total number of convictions handed down during the past year was 1,923. For their part, the juvenile courts prosecuted 18 minors for crimes in the field of violence against women in 2021, 4 more than in the previous year.
