“Instead of living it fully, I want to control my future, which does not exist,” wrote the creator of the popular antivirus John McAffee, who committed suicide on June 23 in the prison cell of Brians 2, in Catalonia, where he had more than eight months in the hospital. Investigators found the note in McAfee’s pants pocket on the day of his death. McAfee’s wife, Janice McAfee, has tweeted the writing, questioning whether it is a suicide note: “This note looks more like one of John’s tweets.”
McAfee took his own life, according to the results of the preliminary autopsy, the same day he was informed of the decision of the National Court to extradite him to the United States, where he was accused of tax crimes. In the morning they explained to him the court’s decision, which he could still appeal, and in the afternoon, he asked to spend some time alone in his cell. Workers at the center found him hanging by his own cords. McAfee had been detained by the National Police on October 3, before flying to Istanbul (Turkey), after the pandemic caught him in Catalonia.
McAfee’s widow, represented in the case through her lawyer Javier Villalba, has from the beginning questioned that the businessman had suicidal tendencies. In her latest entry on the social network Twitter, which McAfee used assiduously to communicate with his more than a million followers, Janice assures that the letter is suspicious and casts doubt on the authenticity of the note. “It’s more like someone trying to imitate John’s style by tweeting.” And he adds: “And if this note was found in his pocket, where are the marks of the folded note inside?”
The note released by McAfee’s wife is full of studs, making it difficult to read. “I am a phantom parasite,” begins the writing, which also refers to their needs. “Instead of living it fully, I want to control my future, which does not exist,” writes McAfee. Some of the readable fragments speak of the present and the past and ends by referring to the “ashes of memory”.
Janice also criticizes the Spanish judicial system. In another writing last Tuesday, also spread through Twitter, accuses the “Spanish authorities” of “covering up” what happened around McAfee’s death. Then he assured that they had not yet received the death certificate, the autopsy or the prison report. “I understand that these things take time, but the lack of cooperation from the Spanish authorities only confirms our suspicion that they have something to hide,” he concluded.
McAfee’s family is already involved in the cause of the magnate’s death, which is being investigated by the Martorell court of first instance and instruction 5. It is a common process when it comes to a violent, unnatural death. The family’s lawyers have already received all the documentation, which they are now analyzing. The intention is to request a second autopsy, which the judge must authorize if he deems it appropriate. They will also request the images prior to the time of the businessman’s death, as well as the list of people who were in contact with him before his death.
