Everything is ready for the ‘No-tobacco race – #I breathe’, a non-competitive race and awareness event against smoking, including passive smoking, born from the collaboration between the University, the Polyclinic (Ptv) and the Cus Tor Vergata, coordinated by professors of the same university Paola Rogliani, full professor of Respiratory Diseases at the Department of Experimental Medicine and director of the UOC Respiratory System Diseases at the PTV, and Vincenzo Ambrogi, full professor of Thoracic Surgery at the Department of Surgical Sciences and director of Uoc Thoracic Surgery at Ptv. The appointment is on May 31st at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, starting at 8.45am.
“On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, announced by the WHO for May 31st – states Rogliani – here in Rome Tor Vergata, with the collaboration of the Faculty of Medicine, the Polyclinic and the Cus, we have decided to organize a dedicated non-competitive event to prevention and the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles. The entire academic and Polyclinic community dedicated themselves to the event: special thanks for the extraordinary organizational capacity of Cus Tor Vergata, to its president Manuel Onorati and to all those who contributed to the organization of the initiative”. Ambrogi defines himself as an “enthusiastic fan” of this No-tobacco race which, “in addition to the sporting aspect, in which I believe very much”, recalls the project of the ‘Surgical Marathon – 24 hours a day’ with which “we intend to extend the hours of our operating theatres, to give the possibility of reducing operating lists which constitute a real problem, especially in patients suffering from tumors, such as those who undergo thoracic surgery”.
In Italy – a note recalls – smoking represents the main cause of preventable death, with over 90 thousand deaths every year. Smoking damage impacts not only our health, but also that of the environment. According to data released last year by the Ministry of Health, approximately 20% of the Italian population over the age of 15 smokes, i.e. over 10 million people. According to ministerial data, tobacco causes more deaths than alcohol, AIDS, drugs, road accidents, homicides and suicides combined and, in particular, is a cause of at least 25 diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung diseases chronic, lung cancer and other forms of cancer, heart disease, vasculopathy. Without considering the great impact of passive smoking, especially during pregnancy.
The No-tobacco race – #I breathe event involves over 400 participants registered in a 4 km non-competitive race on the Campus of the University of Tor Vergata, a large green lung that extends for over 600 hectares around the 6 faculties of the university . The race is associated with the possibility of visiting the information stands with free prevention activities. The stands, open to all, will be managed by the medical and nursing staff of the Polyclinic, including specialist doctors and students of the Faculty of Medicine. After a nursing triage, healthcare activities in pulmonology, cardiology, sports medicine, internal medicine and thoracic surgery will be carried out. These professionals will provide information and will be available to carry out free tests related to lung and heart health, such as spirometry, electrocardiograms and ultrasounds. Advice on healthy lifestyles will also be offered, such as proper nutrition, the importance of physical exercise and the benefits of living a tobacco-free life. There will also be stands animated by volunteers and patient associations.
“The prevention campaign against the damage of smoking is a very important initiative – comments the rector of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Nathan Levialdi Ghiron – because it allows to raise public awareness, with reference precisely to the damage that smoking can provoke, towards healthy and responsible behaviour”. It is “a day that we dedicate to young people – adds the extraordinary commissioner of the Tor Vergata Polyclinic, Isabella Mastrobuono – because the new generations must increase awareness that health must be defended. Our commitment to spreading this culture, unmasking the ‘fascinating and attractive’ false myths about tobacco use”.
The health director of the PTV, Andrea Magrini, concludes: “Health and sport, united to raise awareness of the dangers of cigarette smoking. With this event we make our voices heard in defense of health. Today every small step goes towards a smoke-free future. Vital the contribution of each of us”.
