Farmers from the Huerta Vieja criticize that they now have to pay a fee for the maintenance of the channel of the ditch
Hundreds of farmers from the Huerta Vieja de Ojós have been at odds with the leadership of the Irrigation Community Riegos Ayala Ojos-Villanueva for several years after it decided in 2011 to integrate the Huertas Viejas de Ojós and Villanueva into the aforementioned entity, which controls 2,105 tahúllas of land, of which some 500 belong to the irrigators of Ojós.
“They put us in a community where we are denied the possibility of remaining a traditional organization. They are breaking the law, because the collective uses that until now have had a regime subject to ordinances will continue to be subject to them as long as the users do not decide on their modification. And this is not respected,” laments Ventura Buendía, one of those affected.
«In 2011 the ordinances of the Irrigation Community Riegos Ayala Ojos-Villanueva were approved without holding an assembly and the new directive modified the community member’s vote. The owners of less than one tahúlla of land do not have the right to vote”, explain the farmers. And they denounce that “until now we have not paid anything for the maintenance of the Ojós ditch, and now they charge us 13 euros per tahúlla.”
Through an agreement with the Tax Agency, the irrigation community Riegos Ayala has claimed the Ojós users for the last four years of the fees. In fact, current accounts have been seized to collect said debts.
For their part, the president and treasurer of Riegos Ayala, Pedro Martínez and Jesús Robles, respectively, deny the accusations, and defend that “the Segura Hydrographic Confederation forced us to make the inheritance.” They add that “we have the minutes of the assemblies and the accounts available to the community members. What the irrigators of Ojós want is not to pay anything».
