How do you build a car that combines the practicality of a crossover with the driving pleasure that the real enthusiast is looking for? We wouldn’t know, but Mazda fortunately does. With a model like the CX-5, the brand has already proven very well how to give a spacious crossover a natural balance and an engaging driving character. And now they outdo themselves with the new plug-in hybrid Mazda CX-60.
The design of the Mazda CX-60 immediately speaks volumes. It is basically rear-wheel drive (the front wheels shift when necessary). And you notice that in its lively handling. The all-new plug-in hybrid powertrain also makes the CX-60 the most powerful Mazda ever produced for road use. The combination of its 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G petrol four-cylinder and electric motor produces 241 kW/327 hp. But also for a specified consumption of 1.5 l/100 km and a very usable maximum towing weight of 2,500 kilos.
Pure Japanese design and craftsmanship
Much has been said and written about Mazda’s Japanese approach and philosophies. For the CX-60, the designers went one step further. The further development of the Kodo design language results in what you see here. The powerful design of the Mazda CX-60 is evident in its silhouette: long nose, short overhang, wide hips. Sturdy and elegant at the same time, and moreover not disturbed by unnecessary additions. The Japanese concept of Ma – ‘beauty of empty spaces’ – dictated the design of the CX-60.
For the interior, the designers were inspired by age-old Japanese design traditions. The harmony of Kaichou combines various high-quality materials and textures. Musubu, the art of bookbinding, returns in the beautiful stitching finish on the dashboard. The natural interaction with the HMI infotainment system fits in perfectly with this soothing philosophy. And the Jinba Ittai philosophy – rider and horse as one – is even more pronounced in the seating position. This is optimally matched to the driver’s posture by the Mazda CX-60 itself, via intelligent facial recognition.
Two unique design versions
If you want to go for the maximum in terms of design, choose one of the two special design versions of the Mazda CX-60. The Homura is all about sportiness, with black 20-inch wheels and accents, a black interior and a robust metal finish on the center console. The Takumi is all luxury, with diamond-cut 20-inch wheels and silver accents. Inside you will find maple wood finish and the aforementioned unique stitching on the dashboard.
Whichever version you choose, the Mazda CX-60 is rightfully the next step on the ladder of family crossovers. If you want to know more, have a look on Mazda’s website – where you can also sign up for their newsletter to learn more about the CX-60. We would.
