The temperatures are falling, the corona numbers are rising again. The fourth wave is here. But the new incidence numbers should also be classified correctly. A comment from Merkur’s policy department head Mike Schier.
Munich – The pandemic had almost passed out of consciousness – now Corona is suddenly returning. A Bayern coach who tested positive, an outbreak in the state parliament, rapidly increasing numbers, not least in Upper Bavaria.
One can watch this with concern, there is no reason to panic. Rather, exactly what the experts had always warned about in autumn is occurring: another wave that will ultimately create the herd immunity among the still too many unvaccinated people that is necessary for an end to the pandemic in the coming year.
Corona and the rules: Young people are often infected – breakthroughs in vaccination usually end lightly
After more than one and a half years of Corona, you have to differentiate more than ever: Infection is not the same as infection. Many sick people are children and adolescents who can fight off the disease much better than the old people last winter. And even if there are reports of vaccine breakthroughs, it should be borne in mind that the course is always much more mild than without the vaccine.
It’s like a car accident: even with a seatbelt and airbag, injuries and fatalities cannot be completely avoided. But without it, the consequences would often be dramatic, even with supposedly minor sheet metal damage. In Romania – vaccination rate only around 30 percent – 574 people died on Tuesday, more than in the rest of the EU.
Germany is in a better position thanks to a decent to good vaccination rate. Nevertheless, caution is advised, as a look at Great Britain shows. At least in places that people cannot avoid (supermarkets, public transport), the mask requirement is likely to remain somewhat.
