The deficiencies in maintenance are notable, and the lack of adequate services and constant danger are worrying. Additionally, surveillance is spotty, which has facilitated smuggling and resulted in significant losses of tax and customs revenue.
Despite user demands for improved service, the dealership has neglected these concerns. To address this situation, the federal government has taken measures and recently authorized the change of granting rights to a Variable Capital Investment Promotion Company (SAPI). It is expected that an investment of at least 500 million pesos will be allocated to the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, without expanding its capacity. The executive project has already been presented to the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) for the execution of these works, which are expected to be carried out in a timely manner throughout 2024 and early 2025, with an estimated duration of 18 months.
During 2024, administrative negotiations have been carried out with the SCT and the previous concessionaire to prepare the asset and facilitate the transition.
The Highway Road Operator company NOGAMEX SA de CV becomes the new concessionaire operator of the Nogales Tax Corridor. This change represents significant progress towards efficiency and improvement of conditions for international trade in the region.
The toll booth will be improved and modernized with an electronic toll system, and charging will be adjusted once the rehabilitation and modernization works have been completed.
Other efforts will include extending border crossing times and expanding the available open lanes that currently serve trade, which implies greater human resources for the US Border Patrol (CBP) and the National Customs Agency. of Mexico (ANAM). For example, of the 16 lines that currently exist in the port of Mariposa for the crossing of individuals, on average only 6 checkpoints are open.
As new concessionaires, proceeds will be allocated to an administration trust and payment source, ensuring efficient management of resources and adequate allocation to meet operational obligations. We hope that this mechanism contributes to the sustainability and optimal functioning of the Nogales Fiscal Corridor, benefiting both the region and the traffic of vegetables from Sinaloa to the United States.
