Patients with subspecies BA.2 “Omicron” – a strain of coronavirus, also known as “stealth-Omicron”, again began to complain of loss of smell. He stated this on March 1 in an interview Radio Sputnik neurologist, neurophysiologist Alexander Budik.
“Indeed, stealth-Omicron again gives such symptoms. Now doctors do not have much complete information about how this strain proceeds, but we receive data from different countries that the sense of smell is impaired, ”said Budik.
The specialist added that active research is currently underway on how the “stealth-Omicron” works.
The doctor clarified what is the reason for the loss of smell in coronavirus infection.
“Inside the nasal cavity, in the uppermost part, there is a special olfactory zone, where the cells that perceive odors are concentrated. Information from these cells comes to the brain, and already there, like a mosaic, the perception of this smell is synthesized. Normally, these cells die after some time and new ones mature. With a coronavirus infection, a person has an immune response that can inhibit the maturation of these cells, ”the scientist explained.
For the first time, the Stealth-Omicron strain was discovered in January 2022 in Sweden, clarified “Newspaper.Ru“. The new sub-variant received such a name for its elusiveness for test systems.
Earlier, on February 24, Alexei Agranovsky, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Virology at the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University, said that the “stealth-Omicron” coronavirus is not dangerous for patients who have recovered from the “Omicron” strain.
A large-scale vaccination campaign continues in Russia. Citizens can get vaccinated for free. Six coronavirus drugs have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, KoviVac, EpiVacCorona N, and the Sputnik M vaccine for adolescents.
