The Fraile Island site takes an important step in its public projection: the National Archaeological Museum (MAN) has scheduled a conference for January 31, 2023 in which the co-directors of the excavations, Juan de Dios Hernández (Archaeological Museum de Águilas) and Alejandro Quevedo (Complutense University), will present their historical research project on the aquiline coast, which has already closed its third campaign. It will be at 6:00 p.m., with free admission.
The site located on the aquiline coast, a vein that accumulates vestiges of various civilizations over the centuries in the Hornillo bay, in a place of spectacular beauty and great natural values (the only terrestrial and underwater Asset of Cultural Interest of the Region), has aroused the interest of the MAN, which has included it in the cycle ‘Current Archaeological Research in Spain’, which reviews the most relevant news in this field.
“Isla del Fraile is a site in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula linked to fishing and salting with various historical phases, among which the last centuries of the Roman Empire, the Islamic world and the beginning of the 20th century stand out. The insular nature of the settlement and its ecological value have facilitated the preservation of the remains, but this is also a challenge for research”, highlights the National Archaeological Museum in the activity file.
“Since 2020, thanks to the support of the Águilas City Council, a project promoted by the Complutense University of Madrid and the Águilas Archaeological Museum has been striving to reveal its past,” continues the MAN.
The most important discovery of the third excavation campaign, finished just a few days ago, is a large Roman pool for the production of salted fish with a capacity of 14,000 litres.
