It can be said that long before Tesla revolutionized the world with its electric cars, Nissan had already managed to develop, produce and sell the first mass electric car. The Nissan LEAF was a true commercial revolution. A small, practical and sustainable car that opened the door to a new world. In 2010, its first generation arrived on the market. Today it is still for sale, although its sales have fallen to the point of being insignificant. More or less the same thing happens with the Nissan Ariya and now, that they finally present a really interesting electric car, they are not going to let you buy it. Is called Nissan N7.
Neither the LEAF nor the Ariya are sweeping dealerships anywhere in the world. The first is about to be completely renovated and transformed. The second, the Ariya, has not had the expected reception, although it is not a bad product. The commercial debacle has taken place in all markets, from the United States to Europe through China, the largest electricity market on the face of the earth. To try to breathe life into its Chinese offer, Nissan has partnered with one of the best-known local manufacturers, DongfengN7 being the first product of the union. It is not the first time that Japanese manufacturers have done something like this.
An elegant sedan almost five meters long and a lot of technology
Toyota has already done it with the exclusive Chinese bZ3X, or Mazda with the new and impressive EZ-6. Car that certainly aspires to have a global reach after the good reception in China. The N7 is the first product of the Dongfeng Nissan alliance which aims to relaunch the Japanese presence in China, as stated in The Arc strategic plan presented by Nissan months ago. At first glance the N7 could easily be confused with the XPeng P7, for example. Not only because of its presentation, but also because of its dimensions. We are looking at a large sedan measuring 4.93 meters long, 1.89 meters wide (without mirrors) and 1.49 meters high.
To these proportions we must add a wheelbase of 2.91 meters, which guarantees excellent interior space, although Nissan has not yet let us take a look at the cabin. A cabin that will be dominated by technology, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P processor. This will be responsible for boosting the operation of the screens and the infotainment system, in addition to controlling the latest generation driving assistance technology known as Navigate on Autopilot. It goes without saying that many resources of comfort and practicality that are already a hallmark of China will be distributed throughout the interior.
At the moment, neither party has wanted to give details about the mechanics, autonomy or sales price. The N7 will not go on sale until early 2025 and that will be when Nissan will provide the necessary data. The Japanese hope to increase their presence in China, an essential market today. Looking ahead to 2030, 30 global launches are scheduled, including specific models for Europe. Just a few days ago we learned that the Nissan Micra will borrow much of the technical development of the Renault 5. A small, electric model based on the new AmpR Small platform, the result of the partnership that has united Renault and Nissan for years.
