Two assailants on a motorcycle shot Fredy Román when he was in his vehicle
The journalist Fredy Román, director of the now-defunct newspaper ‘La Realidad’ and a columnist for various print media, was murdered on Monday afternoon as he left his home in Chilpancigo, the capital of the state of Guerrero, in Mexico, in his car. Two assailants on a motorcycle shot at his vehicle. With this homicide, there are already 19 journalists murdered in the country so far in 2022.
The Attorney General of Guerrero has opened an investigation to try to clarify what happened. The Public Ministry explained that Román’s murder may be related to the murder of his son on July 1. The columnist had demonstrated at the facilities of the State Prosecutor’s Office to demand justice and clarification of the facts.
Roman had three decades of experience. Hours before he was assassinated, he published his last article, on the case of the 43 Ayotzinapa students kidnapped, tortured and murdered in 2014. In his writing ‘Crime of State’ he criticized the decision to exonerate former president Enrique Peña Peña Nieto and the one who was Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos.
The journalist’s crime outraged the union, so the Guerrero Journalists Club called for a demonstration this Tuesday in Acapulco to demand justice. The country’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, lamented the murder and expressed his “sadness” at what happened. During his tenure, 34 journalists have been assassinated.
