As tradition dictates, the patron saint of Murcia, the Virgin of Fuensanta, left this Tuesday from the Cathedral to return to her sanctuary in the district of Algezares, in her summer retreat, after spending Holy Week and the Privamera Festival in the capital. The 'Morenica' will return to the Cathedral on September 5, on the occasion of her festival and the Murcia Fair.
The pilgrimage began early in the morning, after the celebration of the mass that was presided over by the bishop of the Diocese, José Manuel Lorca Planes, who highlighted in his homily the figure of the Virgin Mary as Queen of Peace.
“We must learn from her, because she has known how to live with generosity and is at the sources of the living water that is Christ, who is the one who brings peace,” he said. A peace that, Lorca Planes highlighted, “must be built together with effort, reaching out, always forgiving.”
For this reason, the bishop invited those present to be in their daily lives “builders of peace, with gentleness of character, always working for the good of all”, hand in hand with God and his Mother: “No one better than them to, step by step, help us on this path.
At the end of the Eucharist, and after singing the Hymn to the Virgin of Fuensanta, the faithful began the pilgrimage, in which they accompanied their patron saint back to the sanctuary, where they arrived at around 2 p.m., on a particularly warm.
Mandatory stop, after passing through the Plaza del Cardenal Belluga and the Glorieta and crossing the Old Bridge, where the bell of the Virgen de los Peligros rang in his honor, was the church of Carmen. There the 'Morenica' received its traditional bath of flower petals, and the cheers and shouts of 'Guapa, guapa and guapa' were repeated. After a firecracker that sent her away, she began her way back to the mountain, following her usual itinerary: Torre de Romo street, Pío and Saavedra Fajardo and Subida Fuensanta streets. The final destination point, the Fuensanta Sanctuary.
