Until 2016, insurance did not include a premium surcharge for Insurance Compensation Consortium (CCS). This meant that the insured assets were not entitled to any compensation for extraordinary risks. Although insurance companies do not typically cover damage caused by floods or any other natural disaster, this possibility opens if the Government declares the affected area catastrophic due to exceptional circumstances.
To do so, it is necessary that the autonomous community, in this case the Valencian Community, present a report assessing the damage caused. For citizens, this means that they have to wait until now to request aid through the offices that are enabled. In the case of homes and vehiclesa document must be presented that reliably proves the material damage and specifies whether insurance compensation has been requested.
More than 100,000 cars affected
For cars, it is estimated that more than 100,000 of them have been affected by the Dana and the floods of the Valencian Community. One of the problems they pose is that they have become barriers that block streets and highways and hinder the arrival of emergency services and the mobility of citizens.
Valencia cars are practically unused due to the mud and the mechanical damage they have suffered, which means that each of them is a large obstacle of 1.5 tons. Removing them can only be done with cranes, if the wheels can move, or with tractors and excavators if they are blocked. Simply removing one car can take up to half an hour, so removing them all could take one to two months.
According to crane operators consulted by ABC, the priority now is take the cars that block the way to open fields and large parking lots on the outskirts of the affected municipalities. In the autonomous community it is estimated that there are about 100 provincial cranes, but other companies from neighboring regions, such as Alicante, have come to provide help.
For the UME and the Army, the priority is to find the missing and open traffic routes. Before moving any car it is essential to check that there is no one inside.. Although the Network of Road Assistance Companies (REAC) has called for the rest of the country’s tow trucks, they are also obliged to provide service in the rest of the country.
You have to find out what type of policy each car has
Once the vehicles have been placed in the fields, they will have to be identified and an attempt must be made to contact the owner. If the license plate is damaged or missing, this will be done through the chassis number. It is important to find outr what type of policy each car hasbecause if you have full coverage you may be able to receive compensation for floods.
It is the owner of the vehicle who will have to go to his insurer to have an expert assess the damages. Having suffered a flood and having been removed with a crane or excavator, it is most likely that this will be declared a total loss. It is expected that there will be a high demand for experts once the affected streets have been unblocked.
Declaring a vehicle a total loss implies that it will be taken to scrap, but in some cases where the damage is minor it can be repaired in a workshop. The Steps to follow will be determined by the insurance company or with the Insurance Consortium to receive the stipulated compensation according to the market value of the car. This always tends to leave the owners dissatisfied.
