It will urge the Community to build the new marina while the waste is removed from the bay
The Ministry of Ecological Transition, promoter of the regeneration of Portmán Bay, wants to count on the participation of the Community in the new configuration that will be given to the recovery project of this cove, clogged with mining waste between 1957 and 1990 .
According to ministerial sources, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, is going to make this proposal at the meeting of the monitoring commission for the regeneration of the bay, which will be held, predictably in Portmán, on April 4. Specifically, the Ministry’s proposal is the synchronization of the mining waste dredging work in the area closest to the old fishing port of Portmán with the construction of the new infrastructure by the Ministry of Development. According to the Ministry, “these synergies are in line with what was proposed by neighborhood groups in recent meetings.”
If this idea bears fruit, the participation of the regional administration in the works would mean a substantial qualitative change in what has been the definition of the project up to now, since the previous approach consisted of the construction of a marina and traditional uses after the completion of the regeneration.
At the meeting, Morán will inform, among other issues, of the start of the technical consultancy contracting procedure to write the new project and its main lines, as LA TRUTH advanced. And it is precisely in the specifications of the tender where it is warned that in the design of the new project «the comments presented by the neighborhood, social and environmental organizations will be taken into account in their letter of September 3, 2020 and, in addition , that the port of Portmán is an infrastructure of autonomous competence, as the director of Sustainability of the Coast and the Sea of the Ministry has responded».
The social and neighborhood groups demanded “reconsider the surface and depth of the dredging with the double objective of including the extension to the old port and ensuring the stability of the future beach and that [nuevo] port, without having to imply an increase in the volume of mining waste to be dredged”.
“You have to get down to business”
The spokesman for the neighborhood groups of Portmán, Daniel Portero, asks the representatives of the three administrations to “provide certainty about the schedule for the resumption of the works and everything is accelerated because it is time to move on to the facts.” Regarding the role of the Ministry, the Community and the City Council, he appeals to “the need for co-responsibility and coordination, not to cross reproaches.”
