Germany decided to support the defense capability of Ukraine, the country does not become a party to the conflict. This was announced on March 3 by the head of the German Ministry of Economics, Robert Habeck, during a briefing in Berlin.
“Ukraine is at war, and we have decided to strengthen Ukraine’s self-defense … and (its) right to self-defense also by military means, in which we supply weapons,” he said.
According to him, Ukraine’s new requests for arms supplies will be studied by both his ministry and the German government.
Earlier Thursday, the German Ministry of Economy approved the delivery of 2,700 Strela-type anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine.
Also on that day, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Germany would send a new batch of weapons to the country. On February 26, it was reported that 400 German-made anti-tank weapons would be sent to Ukraine.
Prior to this, the country’s authorities did not allow the supply of German-made weapons to the Ukrainian military. Thus, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht ruled out the supply of weapons to Kiev, believing that this would damage the dialogue on resolving the conflict.
On February 28, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commented on the ongoing supply of weapons to Kiev. According to her, in the current situation, the supplied weapons can become the prey of neo-Nazis, terrorists and marauders on Ukrainian territory. At the same time, Zakharova previously noted that Ukraine is already stuffed with NATO weapons, and the number of Western instructors has increased many times in recent months.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. In the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces was reported, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin, after an appeal from the DPR and LPR, signed decrees recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Also, the Russian leader signed agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the republics. The treaties were ratified the next day.
On February 24, Putin announced a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass.
