The Ministry of Economic Development of Russia is not familiar with the bill of the State Duma deputies from the Just Russia – For Truth party on withdrawal from the World Trade Organization (WTO), which became known on Monday, March 21.
“The WTO is the only platform where our interests can be protected. In addition, Russia’s withdrawal from the WTO will be negatively perceived by conscientious participants in international trade who have not joined the sanctions, ”they said. TASS at the Ministry of Economic Development.
The department recalled that the anti-Russian sanctions imposed by a number of countries, from the point of view of the WTO itself, are illegal.
Earlier, on March 21, deputies of the Just Russia – For Truth faction, headed by leader Sergei Mironov, submitted to the State Duma bill on the denunciation of the protocol on the accession of the Russian Federation to the agreement on the establishment of the WTO. The deputies’ initiatives are aimed at protecting “the national interests of the country, the need to pursue a protectionist policy, as well as a response to sanctions pressure and as self-defense,” the explanatory note to the document says.
On March 16, the White House announced Washington’s readiness to tighten anti-Russian sanctions in the economic sphere. The next day, the United States House of Representatives approved an initiative to revoke the status of a country with the most favored nation treatment from the Russian Federation.
Anti-Russian sanctions were imposed by some Western countries after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass on February 24. Shortly before this, the situation in the region escalated due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to Russian territory, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DNR and LNR.
