The patient, a man between 45 and 49 years old, was treated last week at Santa Lucía, in Cartagena, with symptoms of the disease.
The Ministry of Health confirmed this Tuesday to the Ministry of Health the first case of monkeypox in the Region of Murcia. As LA VERDAD advanced, last Friday the Ministry sent samples of a patient between 45 and 49 years old to the National Microbiology Center of Majadahonda who had been treated the day before at the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena with symptoms compatible with the disease. The PCR tests carried out in Majadahonda have confirmed that it is monkeypox.
The patient was passing through the Region, and in fact now remains in isolation in another community. The epidemiological study indicates that the contagion would not have occurred in the Region, but during a trip to Europe, and there are no close contacts that the Epidemiology service has put under follow-up.
According to data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RENAVE), 275 confirmed cases of monkey pox or ‘monkeypox’ had been reported in Spain until Friday. At the moment there are notifications from twelve communities: Madrid (194), Canary Islands (22), Catalonia (26), Andalusia (12), Basque Country (9), Valencian Community (3), Galicia (3), Aragon (3) , Balearic Islands (1), Navarra (1) Castilla la Mancha (1) and from this Tuesday, the Region of Murcia, with one case.
Of the 275 confirmed cases in Spain, 270 are men, 3 women and in 2 of them this information is not recorded. The age ranges between 21 and 65 years, with a median of 36 years.
Outbreaks in Europe
In the rest of Europe, the number of infected now rises to 996. Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease that was until now localized in central and western Africa. Since May, however, outbreaks have been detected in Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom, among other countries. Symptoms usually include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and swollen lymph nodes. Subsequently, rashes begin to appear on various parts of the body.
The virus is spread between people through direct contact with broken skin or through prolonged and close contact with respiratory secretions. Hence, chains of transmission of the virus linked above all to sexual relations are being registered.
