The Secretary of State for Democratic Memory says in Cartagena that he cannot be called Juan de la Cierva, but avoids clarifying whether the measure affects institutes and scholarships with the same name
The Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez López, yesterday urged the regional government to comply with Law 52/2007 on Historical Memory and change the name of the Murcia-Juan de la Cierva International Airport to another. He did it yesterday in Cartagena, at the headquarters of the Workers’ Commissions, where he gave a conference on the Democratic Memory Law. It was as a result of the criticisms made by the Community once the State Attorney filed an appeal in July before the Contentious Administrative Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice (TSJ) of Murcia against the agreement of the Council of Government of Murcia to give that denomination.
Martínez López believes that Juan de la Cierva has “great merit” for being the inventor of the autogyro, but “that does not mean that he did not collaborate with the preparations for the coup d’état on July 18, 1936 that gave rise to the Civil War, not only with the contracting of the ‘Dragon Rapide’ plane that transported Franco from the Canary Islands to Morocco, but also by using his influence to acquire weapons for the national side».
To questions from THE TRUTH, he insisted on three occasions that the laws are there to be followed and that the Executive of Fernando López Miras must abide by it. He asked that no one seek in this petition “a confrontation with Murcia and the Murcians”, because “there is none”.
He insisted that the Community lacks the power to decide on its own the name of an infrastructure “of general interest” such as the airport located in Corvera, invoking article 149 of the Constitution and the Statute of Autonomy of the Region, for this purpose. which affirms that the agreement of the Governing Council of May 12, 2022 is “a decision lacking legal protection.”
However, the Secretary of State avoided responding to the inconsistency that supposes that there are still buildings and institutes with the same name, including the prestigious research grants at the national level, granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. On the other hand, Martínez López was the main intermediary with the Ministry of Defense so that the documentary collections of the Naval Archive would finally remain in Cartagena. Many of those present at his presentation thanked him for it.
