Chihuahua.– On the eve of the discussion and vote on the reform of the National Guard Law, so that it becomes part of the Army, the PAN Senator for Chihuahua, Mario Vázquez, assured that the opposition legislators are obliged to point out the errors in public security of the Federal Government, since in his opinion, militarization is not the solution. He indicated that the states suffer the consequences of an erroneous security policy by the Federation, a level of government to which the Congress of the Union granted a deadline until 2028 to strengthen municipal and state police forces, with the objective of configuring a real state policy. Vázquez Robles emphasized that said task of the Federation was never done, so it has not been possible to do without the federal forces (that is, the National Guard and the Army) in the fight against insecurity. “Militarization is not the solution,” he reiterated, recalling that since the Calderón government to date, this path has been followed and at this time the need to strengthen local police forces is more than clear. He added that the country’s increasingly widespread insecurity crisis is evident, with more than 200,000 murders, despite the fact that militarization has been increasing. “We need to change, to establish public policies on security with a long-term vision, but not only of the future, but of what history has taught us,” said Vázquez Robles. He recalled that history has shown that totalitarian regimes have as a strategy to take over the army, to have it under their control in order to control the population, “that is why the risks of militarization are strong,” he said. He also warned that, by restricting everything to the military sphere, it will be very difficult to control and monitor the relationship with civil society, especially in cases of violation of Human Rights, since there will be no way to resolve them effectively.
