The caravan of about 15,000 migrants that left from the south of Mexico, advances its course towards the north of the country with the hope of reaching US soil. Their last stop was in the town of Huixtla, from where they moved to another municipality in the south of the state of Chiapas. There, some migrants were unable to proceed with the procedures for their immigration documentation, which was also a point of fragmentation of the largest caravan on the continent so far in 2022.
Misfortune, fatigue, and endless obstacles yet to be overcome have not prevented the caravan that left southern Mexico with thousands of migrants, mostly of Venezuelan nationality, from advancing on its course. However, they have now fragmented.
Some have decided to end this arduous path. They walked about 90 kilometers from the beginning of the journey until they reached the town of Mapastepec, in the state of Chiapas.
Exhausted from the journey, dehydrated and hungry, the divided caravan seeks to fulfill its objective, which is to reach the United States. This Friday they left from the municipality of Huixtla to Mapastepec, whose distance is about 60 kilometers. They will spend the night there this Friday.
On foot, from a highway, the migrants share details about the difficulties they experience on a daily basis to cross Mexican territory. “We just want them to let us pass… Some have diarrhea, others have a fever, there are many sick. Others carry the children in their arms”, commented one of the migrants en route.
On Wednesday, the caravan remained in the municipality of Huixtla, some 42 kilometers from Tapachula, where the journey began, to process their legal stay documents, including the so-called multiple immigration forms and humanitarian visas that allow them to travel safely. legal by Mexico.
In some cases they were able to advance with the processing, in others not. What has become one of the issues that has deepened the concern and anguish of migrants. Despite this, some families did not hesitate to follow the path.
Migrant Caravan Division
The caravan has been divided into four groups: the first remains in the town of Huixtla; another camps outside an immigration office waiting for his documents; the third was the one that advanced to Mapastepec. Finally, the fourth and last, is the one that has already obtained documents and has decided to leave the state of Chiapas.
According to data from the National Migration Institute (INM), so far it has delivered some 4,500 copies of the Multiple Migratory Form (FMM), a document that certifies legal stay in the country and with which foreigners regularly have 186 days to leave. and move through Mexican territory, but in this case it only covers them for 30 days.
Another caravan that departs in inhumane conditions in the eyes of the authorities
The caravan is further proof of the absence of public policies by the governments of the region, which leaves thousands of citizens defenseless who venture to travel thousands of kilometers to reach the United States and achieve “better living conditions.” ”.
The migratory flow reached record numbers towards the United States, the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP, for its acronym in English) detected more than 1.7 million undocumented immigrants on the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2021, which ended on last September 30.
In addition, the caravan advances in full development of the Summit of the Americas, which precisely brings together the majority of leaders of the region to address various issues. Among those, one of the most urgent: irregular migration, which has occupied a good part of the agenda of the political leaders who met during the last week in Los Angeles.
A situation that confronts the Mexican Government
The Government of Mexico reported last weekend an increase of 89% year-on-year in the number of migrants presented or channeled by the immigration authority in the first quarter of 2022, adding 77,626 from January to March.
According to data from the Migration Policy Unit, more than 114,000 foreigners have been deported in 2021, figures not seen in almost 15 years. While in fiscal year 2022, which began on October 1, 2021, the CBP has counted more than one million migrants intercepted at the US border.
