The works that will allow the recovery of a symbol of the golden age of mining begin
A moving company has been working since Monday morning to empty the different rooms of the Mazarrón Casino. It is the previous step to undertake the rehabilitation works of the property, a symbol of the golden age of mining in the 19th century in the town. The restoration work, with a budget of 930,000 euros by the Consistory, will allow the building, abandoned for years and the victim of dangerous neglect, to be recovered for cultural use. The furniture that was preserved inside, such as a Catalan-style piano from the Charrier Prats brand, will be stored in municipal warehouses until the recovery of this stately-looking architectural icon with modernist touches is complete.
The works, under the direction of the architect Rafael Pardo Prefasi -whose team also restored the Town Hall-, include cleaning up the building, improving accessibility and recovering its ornamentation. The different rooms, spread over the basement, three floors and a terrace, will be set up as multipurpose spaces.
“The first thing we will do is dismantle the elements to be preserved in order to undertake their restoration, such as carpentry, flooring and moldings,” Pardo Prefasi told LA VERDAD last April. Next, the rehabilitation and interior improvement works will proceed. Communication will be facilitated with open stairs and an elevator, and toilets will be set up on each floor. The original spiral staircase, attributed to the workshop of the famous foundryman Antoine Durenne, will also be preserved. And one of the terraces, the one facing the rear facade, could be used for activities. The work schedule foresees that the rehabilitation of the Casino, a historic claim of Mazarrón, may be finished by next spring.
