The Consorci Sanitari del Maresme proposes that the Mataró hospital temporarily close pediatric admissions that arrive through the emergency service, which would be referred to the Germans Trias-Can Ruti hospital, in Badalona. This is the proposal that management has made to the workers, as confirmed by sources from the works council.
Sources from the Department of Health admit that the center is working on “temporarily reorganizing the service”, due to an “exceptional” lack of paediatricians, and say that no decision has been made. The workers assure that the transfer of pediatric admissions due to emergencies is a measure that is planned to be applied starting next week and until mid-October, a period that Salut does not confirm.
General lack of pediatricians
The Department of Health and the Consorci Sanitari del Maresme recall that Catalonia is experiencing “a context of generalized lack of paediatricians” and point out that the situation at the Mataró hospital is “exceptional” due to the coincidence of several sick leave. In this sense, they emphasize that this is a sudden situation and they separate it from the summer planning that is usually carried out in all hospitals.
Sources from the workers specify that in January a lack of professionals was already evident when the schedules for the entire year were planned, at which time “the hours equivalent to 4.5 pediatricians already needed to be filled.” This lack of specialists would have worsened in recent weeks to the point that the hospital now has an open call for seven pediatric positions to reinforce the service, in which there are now 23 operational doctors.
From Salut they insist that they work to “find the best solution to guarantee pediatric care to the children of Mataró” 24 hours a day. The priority, they assert, is to “maintain urgent pediatric care, deliveries and care for newborns with the highest quality of care.” Regarding admissions from the emergency room, they do not specify whether there will be changes and simply emphasize that they are looking for a way to reorganize the service.
They assure, in any case, that currently “no referral has been made to Can Ruti.” A statement that comes after a text message in Mataró went viral this Thursday stating that “as of today” the pediatric hospitalization service has been closed.
Births and emergencies stay in Mataró
From the works committee, the sources consulted report that the management and the medical and care departments have proposed making a temporary transfer to Badalona to lighten the workload in pediatrics, “always maintaining in Mataró the assistance to births and emergencies that “They did not require hospitalization.”
The same sources add that the proposal to close admissions also includes changing the work shift system, which would be structured globally in 12-hour slots – now they are divided into differentiated shifts of ordinary work in the mornings and emergencies in the afternoons. and nights. Both proposals must be decided by pediatricians, who between this Thursday and tomorrow, Friday, must respond to management.
For her part, the councilor for the Inclusive and Healthy City of the Mataró City Council has made a negative assessment of the news on local television and has stated that “we cannot lose the service”, which is why they will demand explanations from both the Consorci Sanitari of the Maresme and the Health Department of the Generalitat.
