Migraine is a disease that affects more than 4.5 million people in our country and, according to the WHO, it is the sixth most disabling disease that exists. Migraine is more common among women and migraine attacks usually begin in early adulthood and the majority of affected people are between 25 and 55 years old. The Mataró Hospital, a reference center in the Maresme region, is a pioneer in the advancement of treatments for this disease.
More than 1,000 patients with migraine are visited every year at the Mataró Hospital and since the beginning of 2024, new existing treatments have begun to be used, which have already proven effective and have much better tolerability than previous drugs. The center has been one of the first Catalan centers to use them thanks to the collaboration between the Neurology and Pharmacy services, and nearly 500 patients have already been treated successfully.
The objective is to prevent and treat the disabling symptoms of this disease: intense headache, visual discomfort, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, fatigue and loss of appetite. This is an advance in improving the quality of life of people who suffer from this disease, since these new treatments not only help reduce pain and make the discomfort disappear very quickly, but also contribute to making no new crises appear.
