A Disney executive would have blamed sexist viewers for the recent box office failures of films like The Marvels. The information comes from Matt Belloni, entertainment reporter for Puck, who recently published a newsletter with a statement from an anonymous Disney executive.
The Disney executive said: “Everyone says 'It's the movies, silly,' and that's an easy thing for people to say. The movies they like the most are a great way to ignore political issues. But increasingly our audience (or the segment of audience that has been politicized) equates the perceived message in a film to a quality problem.”
“They won’t say they find it in bad taste female emancipation in The Marvels or Star Wars [l’ultima trilogia con Daisy Ridley]but they'll say they don't like those movies because they're 'bad.'”
The anonymous executive concluded the message by stating, “So 'making better movies' becomes code for 'making films that conform to regressive gender stereotypes or that put men in the foreground of the narrative'. Which is what you're seeing now, and which is the goal of Bob's breakthrough [Iger, il CEO di Disney] Right now”.
We also know that part of the Iger's “turning point”. is to focus on theatrical sequels, such as the recently announced Moana 2, and slow down Marvel Studios' production to improve quality.
