In Mexico, the bacteria Helicobacter pylori is the main cause of most cases of gastritis., affecting eight out of ten patients diagnosed with this condition. This is stated by a specialist from the Gastroenterology Service of the Juárez Hospital in Mexico, who highlighted the importance of this problem within the framework of World Digestive Health Day, celebrated on May 29.
Helicobacter pylori is a bacteria that is acquired mainly through the consumption of food contaminated with fecal matter.
This bacteria can remain in the body without generating symptoms, but when they appear, they usually indicate that the disease is in an advanced stage. Among the most common symptoms are abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea, digestion problems, and a feeling of early satiety.
Gastritis in different population groups
Children population
In children, approximately 40% of gastritis cases are related to the consumption of ultra-processed products. However, a modification towards healthier eating habits can lead to a notable improvement.
Adults
In adults, the control of gastritis is more complex. In addition to Helicobacter pylori, gastritis can be induced by the consumption of certain medications, spicy foods, irritating condiments, and saturated fats. Likewise, autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, which require the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, can also contribute to the reduction of the stomach mucosa and, therefore, gastritis.
Stages of Gastritis
Gastritis can occur in two main phases:
Acute Gastritis: Symptoms appear after consuming irritating foods. If not treated in time, it can progress to a chronic phase.
Chronic Gastritis: Characterized by recurrent symptoms even without the ingestion of irritants, due to the loss of cells in the stomach caused by constant inflammation.
Treatment and Prevention
The treatment of gastritis includes the use of various types of antacids, which can be short, rapid or long-acting. However, prolonged consumption of these medications can lead to poor absorption of nutrients and increase vulnerability to gastrointestinal infections. In addition, they can mask other conditions, delaying their diagnosis and adequate treatment.
The gastroenterology specialist at Hospital Juárez de México recommends going to a doctor in the presence of symptoms suggestive of gastritis, such as pain focused in the upper part of the abdomen, frequent nausea or vomiting. It is essential to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment to avoid major complications such as gastric ulcers or even gastric cancer.
