The head of the investor relations department of the Novatek company, Alexander Nazarov, recalled a quote from the fairy tale “Kid and Carlson”, answering a journalist’s question about the outcome of the rivalry between natural gas and renewable energy sources. The conversation took place within the framework of the Dialogue with the Company conference. RIA News…
“This is a great question. And, probably, in this case it is like a question “have you stopped drinking cognac in the morning”? “Yes” and “no” will probably be the wrong answer, ”Nazarov assessed the long-term rivalry. In the story of the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren, Carlson asked the housekeeper, Freken Bock, if she uses cognac in the morning to prove to her the existence of questions that cannot be answered only in the affirmative or negative.
Nazarov said that Novatek, which is Gazprom’s main competitor in the Russian market, considers green energy to be an objective reality. The top manager believes that the consumer has three requirements for the energy source – availability, safety and environmental friendliness. He suggested that gas will not compete with green energy, but will become its reserve source. Renewable sources cannot be relied on yet due to their high cost and low reliability, Nazarov explained. He recalled that this year Europe faced a shortage of electricity due to weak wind. Similar problems, but due to drought, affected Brazil. For this reason, the South American country has dramatically increased its demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG).
In early autumn, gas prices in Europe rose sharply. In October, the cost of a thousand cubic meters of fuel approached two thousand dollars, setting a historical maximum. As of 4:30 pm on November 2, December futures were trading at $ 837. One of the reasons for the decline was the statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin about an imminent increase in supplies to the European market to stabilize prices. The head of state instructed Gazprom to increase the volumes in European gas storage facilities after replenishing Russian reserves.
