Madrid is more fashionable than ever. The capital closed 2024 with a record number of visitors, 11.2 million, and international spending, with a total of 16,141 million euros. In addition, it was named the second most attractive urban destination in the world by Euromonitor, ahead of Tokyo and only behind Paris. To promote “a model that works”, the City Council approved this Thursday at the Government Board the Strategic Tourism Plan 2024-2027, prepared by the branch area, in coordination with the different agents of the sector and with other administrations.
This new roadmap, announced taking advantage of Fitur week, is articulated in three fundamental premises. The first, detailed yesterday by the vice mayor of the capital, Inma Sanz, seeks to promote the essence of the city, “its lifestyle, its culture, its gastronomy.” Another objective is to ensure that Madrid is also a better city to invest in, with projects that boost infrastructure and the organization of large events. [como la Fórmula 1]».
Finally, they seek to promote redistribution, “focused on tourism that is balanced, sustainable, that respects coexistence with neighbors”, all of this “promoting deseasonalization and decentralization.” In fact, just take a look at this year’s tourism strategy to see that the milestones to be promoted are distributed throughout the entire year (Chinese New Year, Easter, musical season, Christmas…) and throughout all the districts (the Chinatown of Usera, the art of Carabanchel, among others).
These premises are specified in three main axes: the economic, social and environmental. In the first case, the increase in the average stay, the increase in tourist spending, the organization of the accommodation supply, the quality of employment in the tourism sector, the economic impact of large events and the innovation and digitalization of the sector will be evaluated. sector.
In the environmental field, the aim is to reduce CO2 emissions, compensate for the environmental impacts of large events, ecological certification of tourist establishments and increase sustainable mobility.

Finally, in the social area, to promote coexistence between residents and visitors, tourist pressure, the visitor satisfaction index and the citizen satisfaction index with tourism, among others, will be controlled. This indicator can also include the regulation of tourist housing. In this sense, Sanz recalled that the municipal government does not seek eradicate them “in a blunt manner” but rather “make them compatible with residential uses”, hence the commitment to placing them in complete buildings. In his opinion, it is the market itself that will end up resorting to these solutions: «Initially there may be a reduction in those apartments that cannot be legalized at this time, but there are alternatives and, in addition, the total number of apartments is increasing in a very significant way. the hotel offer.
All with the aim of looking face to face (and reaching) Paris.
