The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will expand the fictional universe of the original trilogy based on JRR Tolkien’s novels. The story will be set in the Second Age of the Sun when said rings were created and fans couldn’t be more excited for its premiere.
“Until now, audiences have only seen the story of the One Ring on screen, but before there was one, there were several… and we’re excited to share this remarkable story of all of them,” said showrunners JD Payne and Patrick Mckay.

In a new interview for Vanity Fair, Patrick McKay spoke about the Game of Thrones comparisons and made it clear that it will not be a copy. In short, it will not have the same use of sexuality or violence, since it will have a familiar tone like that of Tolkien’s books:
“[La meta era] put on a show for everyone, for 11, 12 and 13 year olds, even if sometimes they have to hide under the covers or cover their eyes if something is too scary. We talked about tone in Tolkien’s books. This stuff is often scary, sometimes very intense, sometimes quite political, sometimes quite sophisticated, but it’s also warm and optimistic. It’s about friendship and brotherhood and overcoming darkness.”

What is the series about?
The epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. During its 8 episodes, we will learn about an era in which great powers were forged, heroes were put to the test, hope almost died and a terrible villain threatens to cover the entire world in darkness.
