The head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, told The Hollywood Reporter that he was hoping for a release of the Lord of the Rings series already in 2021, but the plans were abruptly changed by the pandemic.
The journey will begin on September 2, 2022 with the premiere of our original The Lord of the Rings series on Prime Video. I am unable to express the enthusiasm we feel in bringing our worldwide audience to Middle-earth! Our talented producers, cast, creative and production team have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this incredible show to life.
The Lord of the Rings showrunners are Patrick McKay And JD Payne, both with no previous experience running such a TV show. But on the other hand, DB Weiss and David Benioff were also inexperienced when they worked on Game of Thrones, which has become a huge colossus of TV series.
Payne and McKay said in an interview:
As Bilbo says, “Now I’m almost ready for another trip.” Living and breathing Middle-earth in recent months has been the adventure of a lifetime. We can’t wait for fans to have the chance to do so too.
Boasting a budget of 465 million dollars for the first season, the Lord of the Rings series is one of the most expensive television productions in history. Salke stressed that the entire figure was used to build the infrastructure of the series and meet the needs of a large audience.
In addition to the official release date, it was shown to the public the first official image from the TV series, published via a Twitter post:
