The letter that millions of retirees are receiving with the increase in pensions that has overthrown Congress

“One more year, I have the pleasure of writing to you to inform you of the increase in your pension in 2025.” It is the beginning of the letter that millions of pensioners are receiving from the Minister of Social Security, Elma Saiz. An increase that has just been annulled in Congress by the vote against PP, Junts and Vox. The letters inform the beneficiaries of increases in their pensions that, although they will be collected in January, have declined heading into February.

The letters announcing the increase in pensions are recurring every year. As in 2024, the letters are sent in the middle of January, a few days before the beneficiaries receive the first payroll with the new amounts of their pensions. On Tuesday, the Ministry reported on its social networks about the sending of these letters.

“The revaluation of the pension based on the consumer price index (CPI) of the previous year is today a right of all pensioners, guaranteed by laws promoted by the Government,” Saiz highlights in this year’s letter.

On this occasion, the pension increases approved by the Government at the end of the year2.8% in general, according to the average CPI, 6% in the case of the minimum and 9% in the case of non-contributory and the minimum vital income.

Retirees receive the letter from the minister informing them of the general increase and, in addition, a breakdown of the progress of their specific pension, which is now cancelled.

Social Security has stated that pensioners will receive the increase in their benefits in January, because the payment order had already been issued, but that in the face of February these decline. In the department of Elma Saiz they pointed out this Wednesday to PP and Junts: “These groups will have to explain why they have cut pensions in 2025 and why pensioners, after seeing their pension revalued in January, are going to have to endure it being lowest in February.”

The majority unions, CCOO and UGT, have announced mobilizations on February 2 against the cancellation of these social measures, which they consider “an unprecedented attack” on the social majority. The workers’ confederations have asked the coalition government to approve a decree again with measures to avoid the lack of protection of citizens.

“There are millions of people affected. Pensioners who would not see their contributory and non-contributory pension revalued, as well as minimum pensions; SMI and IMV recipients; public transport users; vulnerable people at risk of eviction or who will see their aid disappear to pay for basic supplies,” both unions lamented.
