The senator and former soccer player Romario de Souza Fariachampion with Brazil in the 1994 Fifa World Cup in the United States, was registered at the age of 58 by América, the Brazilian club he presides, to compete in the second division Carioca Championship, which begins in May.
The news was revealed by the former forward of clubs such as the Spanish Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven in a video on the team's social networks and in which he shows the document that certifies his registration as a footballer for the tournament.
“News coming soon,” says the 1994 World Cup scorer and idol of local clubs such as Flamengo and Vasco da Gama.
As a possible player for América, a small but traditional team from Rio de Janeiro, he will be a teammate of Romarinho, one of his sons, and the attacker André, who played alongside Neymar and Paulo Henrique Ganso in Santos.
Romario, who maintains his form thanks to the little games he plays with friends on the beach, stated that he intends to talk with America's coach, Marcus Alexandre, about the best way in which he can be used on the field.
According to the Rio team, Romario signed a contract to play until December for which he will receive a minimum salary as a reward, which the former soccer player himself promised to donate to the club.
Romario has been an unconditional fan of América since he was a child, a passion he inherited from his late father, Edevair de Souza Faria, which led him to assume the presidency of the club at the beginning of this year.
His last game as a professional was in 2009 precisely as a player for América, after his father asked him to reinforce the team that was then competing for access to the first division of the Carioca Championship.
The tournament that will have Romario as the new protagonist begins on May 12 and will be played by twelve clubs, including some that have been traditional in the first division of Rio de Janeiro such as Cabofriense and Olaria. Only the champion of the competition guarantees a place in the honor division.
