The Assembly of the entity knocks down the proposal of the Governing Board to use an inclusive language, like other schools in Spain; in Murcia and Lorca there will be similar votes
The lawyers of the judicial party of Cartagena decided this Friday to maintain the name of “Illustrious Bar Association of Cartagena”, instead of applying the inclusive language and changing it to “Illustrious Bar Association of Cartagena”. At a meeting of the Assembly, there were 48 votes in favor of the name change, 60 against, and two abstentions. About a thousand members were called to participate.
The proposal was made by the Governing Board of the Association, whose dean is Ángel Méndez, within the process of adapting the Association’s Statutes to those of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers. Similar votes will be held in Murcia and Lorca.
Supporters of the new name defended the need to “make visible the growing presence of women in the profession” and opposed to it claimed not to feel that there is discrimination and semantic reasons.
There are 83 colleges and the ‘yes’ vote has won in most of the elections already held, according to judicial sources. This is the case of Madrid, which adopted the agreement in March. In Malaga they chose to keep the name, but use the term lawyer in their corporate image.
