With four months left in his term, Biden will address the UN General Assembly while the two wars still pose dilemmas that are likely to persist even after he leaves office.
With efforts to reach a truce in Gaza faltering and a cross-border battle raging between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, the Pentagon said Monday it would send a limited number of additional troops to the Middle East as a precaution.
Several challenges have dominated Biden’s foreign policy during his presidency, starting with the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, to Hamas’s attack on southern Israel and its hostage-taking on October 7, and Israel’s response to that by launching a military campaign in Gaza.
Efforts to counter China and Iran also occupied a significant amount of the president’s time.
Biden’s speech, which will be delivered at 10 a.m. ET, will give him an opportunity to talk about what he sees as major accomplishments during his term, and he will say that the international community must support Ukraine and that a diplomatic solution is needed in the Middle East, a senior administration official said.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to New York that Biden will lay out “his vision for how the world can work together to solve these big problems and defend fundamental principles like the United Nations Charter.”
