The last race of the MotoGP World Championship that had to be held in two weeks in Cheste, a circuit located in one of the areas of the Valencian Community most devastated by DANA, will finally be held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as confirmed by Dorna Sports to this newspaper.
The final Grand Prix of the World Championship in which the MotoGP title will be decided between Jorge Martín and Pecco Bagnaia will be held on the same dates, the weekend of November 15-17, as planned.
The best option
Carlos Ezpeleta maintains that Montmeló was the best “possible location” due to its proximity to Valencia
Dorna, the promoter of the championship, will ask the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia to organize the last GP at the Circuit de Barcelona in Montmeló. As confirmed by Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP sports director, “Catalonia is the best possible location due to proximity and for the fans, from a logistical point of view. It will always be for Valencia, we will try to help the situation that is being experienced as much as possible,” he said into the Dazn microphone.
The two options that were initially considered to replace Valencia were Montmeló and Losail (Qatar).
The reasons
Economic and logistical issue
The choice of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló is mainly due to an economic and logistical issue, for greater organizational ease. Both the promoter, Dorna Sports, based in Madrid and Barcelona, and the majority of the teams are located in the Catalonia area.
Furthermore, many teams, especially Moto2 and Moto3, are quite tight on budget at this time of the year, and traveling to Doha (Qatar) again would have meant having to make an unforeseen and very considerable financial effort.
