The live-action series of The Last of Us is in the midst of filming for its second season. Based on early looks and set photos circulating online, season two will likely cover the early sections of Ellie’s revenge tour seen in The Last of Us: Part II. Apparently, HBO might want to expand the second game into not one, not even two, but maybe three seasons.
In an interview with the microphones of Deadline, Neil Druckmann And Craig Mazin have confirmed that the second season of the show will include seven episodes, one of which Mazin describes as “fairly large” but not in “length.” This is two episodes fewer than the first season which covered all the events of the first game, a number that arrived following careful consideration by Druckmann and Mazin, after the decision was made to tell the story of the Part II in multiple seasons.
“The narrative material that we got from Part II of the game is much more than the narrative material that was in Part I. So part of what we had to do from the beginning was figure out how to tell that story across seasons”Mazin said. “When you do that, you look for natural breaking points, and as we presented it this season, the natural breaking point seemed to come after seven episodes”.
“We don’t think we’ll be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 e 3] because we’re taking our time and going down interesting paths that we did a little bit in the first season too.”continues Mazin. “We think it will almost certainly be true that, as long as people continue to watch and we can continue to make more television, season three will be significantly bigger. In fact, the story may require a fourth season.”.
“We want to reassure people that the idea that this upcoming season is going to be a little bit shorter than the first is not because we’re taking less time to tell the stories, but because we want to take more time. The story we’re telling is much bigger than the first season. There’s just a lot more to do, it’s a lot harder to produce, but we want every episode to feel like a blockbuster in its own right, to be honest with you.”concludes Mazin.

While they don’t outright confirm there will be a fourth season, Mazin and Druckmann say they have the entire show planned up until the conclusion of Part II, seeming fairly certain that, as it stands, that’s the plan.
The Last of Us season 2 will premiere on Max in 2025. Pedro Pascal And Beautiful Ramsey will reprise their respective roles as Joel and Ellie, while Kaitlyn Dever will play the role of Abby. Jeffrey Wright also joined the show’s cast as Isaac, having previously played the character in The Last of Us: Part II.
