30% of Murcian SMEs have a presence abroad, compared to 26.1% of Spanish ones. Sales abroad represent 32.5% of the total, while in Spain they are 27.2%. SMEs in the Region export on average to 12.4 countries, falling to 11 nations in the case of small and medium-sized Spanish companies.
Internationalization is the main strength of Murcian SMEs, but not the only one, compared to the national average, as revealed by the report ‘Digitalization and sustainable development of SMEs in the Region of Murcia’, carried out by the Chair of Competitiveness of the College of Economists, in collaboration with the University of Murcia and the Polytechnic of Cartagena, and based on a survey of 300 companies in the region, and a total of 1,044 throughout the country.

One of the directors of the report, Domingo García, professor at the UPCT, stressed yesterday, during the presentation, that «2021 was a turning point in the face of the crisis caused by Covid-19 and led to a significant increase in income in many SMEs . In the case of Murcia, 55.3% of the companies surveyed increased their sales, while 36% managed to maintain them and 8.7% reduced them».
Likewise, García pointed out that the sales expectations for 2022 are also more favorable in the Region of Murcia than for the whole of Spain, although «uncertainty is the predominant tonic of an unstable socioeconomic scenario that changes every second, so there are no certainties,” he argued.
The report data details the challenges of the productive sector in the Community in the face of new technologies applied to production. SMEs point to high investment costs and lack of qualified personnel as the main barriers to digital transformation.
