Moscow disagrees with Washington’s statements that the Russian side has “let the whole world down” by blocking a draft resolution on climate and security in the United Nations (UN) Security Council. This was stated by the Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov, reports TASS…
He found the document inadmissible. According to the politician, the climate agenda should not be a factor limiting countries in their right to development. Peskov stressed that these restrictions, in particular, should not come from states that have significantly harmed the climate, ensuring themselves a high rate of development to obtain a highly industrial economy.
Earlier, the Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield accused Russia of undermining the interests of the world by blocking the draft resolution. In her opinion, only the UN Security Council can guarantee that the impact of climate change on security will be integrated into the work on conflict prevention and mitigation, peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance.
On December 13, it became known that Russia vetoed the draft climate resolution at a meeting of the UN Security Council. The document, which was proposed by the delegations of Ireland and Niger, considered climate change as a threat to international security. The project was supported by 113 countries, including 12 members of the Security Council. Russia and India opposed it.
