King Felipe VI returned to recover this Thursday his motto that “we are all part” of the solution to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, at the inauguration of the IV Forum La Toja Atlantic Link dedicated on the first day to the different crises caused by that war, and wanted to introduce an allusion to the multiple economic impact of that conflict. In this context, the monarch advocated before political representatives of the classic Spanish two-party system and the large companies of the Ibex 35 for an economic policy that takes this situation into account: “The new monetary policy of the central banks, more restrictive, must go hand in hand with the attention to economic growth and the evolution of the labor market”. The first day of the forum focused on reflecting on Ukraine, an award was given to the Ukrainian people, the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and Spain praised their mutual work and the high foreign representative of the EU, the Spanish Josep Borrell, launched a future warning message for the Russian invader about the reconstruction of the attacked country: “He who pollutes pays and he who destroys pays and Russia will have to pay for it”.
The La Toja Vínculo Atlántico Forum is a space for reflection on the importance of vindicating the values of liberal democracies, which has now reached its fourth edition and which on this occasion is totally contaminated by the consequences of all kinds of war seven months in Ukraine. It could not be otherwise. The Ukrainian ambassador to Spain, Serhii Pohoreltsev, collected the award from the Ukrainian people for their heroic behavior with the symbol of a reproduction of the bridge that joins the town of O Grove (Pontevedra) to the spa island of A Toxa and thanked the support and the solidarity of Europe, of Spain, of its government and of the Spanish people and warned that their fight “is not over”.
Felipe VI, who has attended all the inaugurations of this unusual space for debate in Spain, picked up that glove, expressed his admiration for the firmness shown by the executive, the army and the people of that country. He stressed, like last year, the need to defend freedom and the democratic values of open societies and there he concluded that the serious Russian aggression has had at least the positive effect of reinforcing “the Atlantic and NATO link and the European response ”. The King praised the specific role in this work of “unitary, firm and forceful response” of the EU of the high representative of the Commission, Josep Borrell and recalled the economic impact of that invasion: “The enormous distortion in the energy markets, of food and raw materials, generating inflationary processes unknown decades ago”. The monarch asked the speakers, guests and experts of the Forum to pay specific attention “to the fight against inflation and energy security” and added his request for the situation to be adjusted to the central banks, a few weeks after the rise in interest rates. interest announced by the heads of the European Central Bank, led by Christine Lagarde.
The session concluded with a talk between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, José Manuel Lagares, and his counterpart in Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, moderated by Josep Piqué, “factotum of the forum”, as the promoter of the event, Amancio López, defines him. Seijas, and former minister of that area of the governments of José María Aznar. The Ukrainian minister intervened by videoconference and thus thanked Spain for the help provided so far, portrayed Vladimir Putin’s intentions and threats to scare Europe and opted to reinforce the united response to defeat him and end the feeling of impunity with which he has performed so far. Albares recounted all the measures and actions undertaken by Spain, within the EU and NATO, to stop Russia and pointed out that this leadership will be even greater in nine months when the rotating presidency of Europe is assumed. The Ukrainian minister asked to speed up his country’s integration process into the EU and Albares admitted that Ukraine cannot be required to do the same as another candidate in a scenario of normality and not of war.
Few women in the forum
The first day of the forum again highlighted the lack of women in the family photo of the main promoters of the event and its sponsors with King Felipe VI and the other authorities, in which none were among the 15 present. During the three days and different conferences and talks in which the forum is organized, in which 35 speakers participate, there are 12 women. It is not the first time that this criticism has been made of the promoters of this meeting. It was already done in 2020 by the current high foreign representative of the EU, the former Spanish minister Josep Borrell, and it was promised that this error would be corrected in the future. Borrell was in the front row this Wednesday in a talk between the Spanish and Ukrainian foreign ministers, moderated by another man, Josep Piqué. The traditional dialectical meeting this Friday between former presidents Felipe González and Mariano Rajoy will be directed by the journalist Anabel Díez.
